My scholarly and professional activities are devoted to developing the field of disability studies in the humanities and in women's studies.

My new book, Staring: How We Look, published by Oxford University Press, draws on examples from art, media, fashion, history and memoir to explore the factors that motivate staring and considers the targets and the effects of the stare. It is a bodily inventory then enumerates how stares actually operate in daily life in order to advance new ways of thinking about visuality, the body, and the overlap between the humanities and human behaviors.
