The
1996 Strike: Editorial, The Atlanta Constitution, Tuesday, September 24, 1996 "The
orchestra's musicians have devoted years to mastering the tools of the
musical trade. They have survived demanding auditions and apprenticeships
to secure their jobs in Atlanta. With the ASO widely acknowledged as one
of the top 10 orchestras in the land, its musicians must also be considered
as among the 1,000 best in America at what they do.
Attaining the level of precision, expression and nuance that has marked the ASO's emergence as a world-class ensemble requires both individual talent and uncommon collective dedication. What has developed at Symphony Hall is a winning combination, no more to be trifled with than the Braves' dynasty...
The management
and board of the ASO have an unenviable job keeping costs under control
while soliciting donations each year to make up for shortfalls in ticket
revenue. But like the musicians, they need to demonstrate grand artistic
ambitions for Atlanta." Dave Kindred, The Atlanta Constitution, Wednesday, October 9, 1996 "So the orchestra poobahs ought to stop the haggling. Give the musicians their 5 percent raises. Stop trying to cut the roster by six players. Just shaddup and let us hear the music." Resolution of the Atlanta City Council, October 7, 1996 "NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA
expresses its concern about the current management-employee impasse; and
Be it further resolved that the City of Atlanta encourages the management
of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra to take those steps necessary to continue
negotiations with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra musicians so that the
number of musicians and the salary of musicians are sufficient to maintain
the world-class status of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra." |
