Important Tournament-Day Parking Information!

1)  ALL vans and cars should park in the Peavine Parking Deck or the Peavine Parking Lot located to the west of the gym. All parking is free (even if you have to take a ticket to get into the lot). Please save what little street parking we have for busses.

2) Buses should drop off teams either along Fraternity Row / Eagle Drive (the road with the driveway to Peavine Lot and Deck) or along Dickey Drive BEHIND the Chemistry building. If you stop in front of the Atwood Hall / White Hall, be very aware whether you are blocking the road. There is very limited bus parking on campus. Some busses can park on Dickey Drive right behind Atwood. These are car spots labeled for faculty and staff, but if they are free, busses are welcome. More bus parking is here near the Glenn Church: bus parking link FISHBURN DRIVE .  If these spaces are filled, then we have unlimited bus parking at EmoryŐs Briarcliff (West) campus located approximately a half mile from the campus on Briarcliff Rd.  At the conclusion of the Olympiad coaches may call the bus drivers to come and pick them up.

3) Directions to Briarcliff (or West) Campus. Emory West Campus (Briarcliff Campus)

                       - Take Fraternity Row to Dickey Dr.

                       - (R) onto Dickey Dr. to Oxford Rd.

                       - (R) onto Oxford Rd. to N. Decatur Rd.

                       - (R) onto N. Decatur Rd. to Briarcliff Rd.

                       - (L) onto Briarcliff Rd.

                       - Briarcliff campus is 1/4 mile up on your right

HOTELS???

There are two hotels within walking distance of the Emory campus. The conference center is expensive, but sometimes has great weekend rates.

               http://www.univinn.com/

This option, is close (driving) and has a pool, and is often booked!

Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites ATLANTA-EMORY UNIVERSITY AREA. Everyone loves this place (but itŐs just a Holiday Inn)

2183 NORTH DECATUR RD.  DECATUR, GA 30033 UNITED STATES  Hotel Front Desk: 1-404-320-0888

This link should show about 12 motels along Interstate 85 between 400 and Shallowford Road (in addition to the ones discussed above). All are sufficiently convenient to the Emory area.

Dear Coaches,

I need to announce a major rules change for Protein Modeling at the Emory tournament next week. We will allow each team to use ONE laptop that they must bring themselves for the competition.

In the event that this is not possible for your team, please notify me ASAP, and we will have a computer for your team to use.

I have tried to anticipate how this will change the actual competition phase, and I must say except the challenge of getting a file from the internet using a _strange_ computer, I cannot think of any. I expect that a team will download and save the pdb files to their hard drive in advance. This does not materially change the event. It may even improve the competition, except of course that it puts teams without access to a laptop at a disadvantage. I hope this is not the case, and that you can manage access to a laptop, or that our Emory computers are adequate for a fair competition. On the positive side, it also takes the vagaries of internet connectivity out of play since the pdb files will be local. The rules specify internet access is not allowed (and we'll be looking over their shoulders), and that five pages of notes ARE allowed. No changes there.

It is the weekend, and my other job (teaching) is at a bay, and I am working furiously on the Olympiad. I will send a schedule today with locations, and also logistical info (parking, etc.).

Best,

Michael

Helicopter Venus

The helicopter venue is on the 4th floor of the Woodruf PE Center (a.k.a., WoodPec). It is slightly smaller than the size of two basketball courts. It has hanging lights about 20 feet from the floor. The ceiling slopes, varying in height between 25 feet and 33 feet. The HVAC cannot be turned off.

A QUESTION AND ANSWER

Professor McCormick:

Can you confirm which bird list will be used for the Ornithology test on Saturday? Will it be the National listhttp://www.soinc.org/ornithology_c or the Georgia list http://www.aug.edu/gaso/6-12.html ? The rules allow us to bring in one list and we'd like to make sure it's the correct one.

Thanks very much for your assistance.

Sincerely,
