MaqFacs: Facial Movement Maps

We have developed a facial movement map, describing the proposed movements for macaque facial muscles. Below you can see one of these maps overlaid on a macaque face image. The circles represent the muscle origins and the lines represent the length of the muscle body. The muscle will contract towards the origin, thus giving an indication of what the movement will look like. Captions for these muscle abbreviations can be seen at the bottom of this page. We have expanded on the FACS and ChimpFACS by including three notable ear movements identified by three distinct muscles. These figures are from a paper by Waller and colleagues soon to appear in Physiology and Behavior.
