FastCat FAQ and Basic Skills Recommendations

FAQ

1.  How are the FastCat backlog shelves organized?
A:  Alphabetically by title.

2.  What is FastCat material?
A:  Books that have a DLC record and an 050 call #, except M’s and P’s (and BF, BX, CD, D, and N’s with 2 cutters); also Added copies and Added volumes.

3.  How can you tell whether something is an Analyzed Serial?
A:  Look up the title in the EUCLID authority file and check the 690 field note or check the Series Authority File shelflist.

4.  Where is the holding area for bindery books?
A:  Shelves near the B&M workstations.

5.  What are the places (besides the Stacks) that a book with EUCLID location "Stacks" might be?
A:  On a book truck waiting to get marked/bound; at Binding and Marking; on a book truck waiting to get shelved; on the cataloger’s desk.

 

Basic Skills (suggested FastCat skills for all CaTS staff)

  1. Life cycle (flow) of materials through technical services
  2. Distinguish between FastCat and Cat materials
  3. Basic (author, title) OCLC search (except perhaps B&M)
  4. Dates in EUCLID, for example: date ordered, date cataloged, date received, etc.

Date Ordered: Choose Display2, scroll down to the Orders info. and highlight (click on) the "Order ID", then choose Edit Order, hit enter, and scroll down to bottom of record, look at "date ready" box.

Date Cataloged: Choose Edit Item, hit enter, scroll down to "date cataloged" box

Date Received: Choose Display2, scroll down to the Orders info. and highlight (click on) the "Order ID" then choose Edit Order, hit enter, and scroll down to bottom of record, look at "date received" box.
