Unicorn 99.4: The Major Changes
A Preparedness Guide for CaTS Staff and Other Prospective Users
5/18/00
If all goes as planned, Emory Libraries will be upgrading their integrated library system to Sirsis Unicorn 99.4 on Sunday, May 21, 2000. This upgrade will change the way that work is performed in some of the systems most important functions. An introductory description of the changes that will have the most impact for Technical Services work is provided in this document. The 99.4 training sessions scheduled for 5/18 will provide more complete information about these changes. More detailed documentation will be made available as possible, and the post-upgrade training sessions scheduled for May 30 and June 1 (9-12 and 1-4 both days) will give users an opportunity to explore 99.4s new functions in greater detail.
99.4 WorkFlows and the Character-Based Interface (CRT)
Important: As far as we know, Sirsi will continue to support the character interface (character client) that many users now access through CRT telnet sessions. However: users should understand that Sirsi has made no enhancements to CHUI (Character User Interface), nor does it intend to do so. Staff who are testing 99.4 are doing so primarily in WorkFlows, which is considered by Sirsi to be the staff client (i.e. "official" interface). Because Wizards and their functions do not exist in CHUI, there is no guarantee that the CHUI will have all the same functions as WorkFlows. Users who use a combination of WorkFlows and CHUI are responsible for testing and verifying that the work they perform in CHUI is fully compatible with WorkFlows.
Some administrative tasks will still only be available in CHUI, and some other Library Divisions (such as Circulation) will still depend on CHUI for large parts of their work. But when a EUCLID feature is available in both interfaces, staff are encouraged to learn to use WorkFlows effectively and efficiently.
SmartPort
In 99.4 SmartPort will no longer automatically replace the control number when importing records. To restore this function you must reconfigure the SmartPort match points. Instructions for this can be found in Step 5 of the "Upgrading Individual Workstations" document on the CaTSDOC website. Resetting the match points once will return the control number replacement function for all subsequent SmartPort download operations.
MARC Import
The MARC Import process is no longer completely character-based. The Utilities menu where the MARC Import function was previously located has been removed from the 99.4 menu bar. To use the MARC Import function users will need to add the MARC Import icon to their toolbar and configure the viewing and printing options. Assistance for this will be available from Tech Group.
WorkFlows Printing
You will now be able to use the either the printer icon on the toolbar or the Print command from the File menu interchangeably to print from any screen. If you are printing from a Public Access search, the icon or the command will bring up the EUCLID Printing Choices screen. If you are printing from a wizard or staff command screen, the screen data will appear in a Wordpad window (or in another printing application if you choose). Complete descriptions and instructions for WorkFlows printing in 99.4 can be found in the "Upgrading WorkFlows Printing Functions" document on the CaTSDOC Website.
Reports
The Utilities menu where the Reports function was previously located has been removed from the 99.4 menu bar. Users will need to create and view reports by using the Reports toolbar.
CHUI cannot be used to run reports created with the Report wizards in 99.4 WorkFlows. Reports created in the CHUI interface must be run in CHUI or converted to WorkFlows. Once a CHUI report has been converted to WorkFlows, it cannot be run again in CHUI, so users should remember to make a back-up copy before converting. Finished reports for either interface can be viewed in WorkFlows.
Cataloging Functions
The CATCMD toolbar will no longer be available. It has been replaced by the CAT toolbar, containing wizardized versions of the cataloging functions. Users will need to individually configure the new cataloging wizards to reflect their own preferred searching and display strategies. The new displays will replace such familiar commands as Display1 Item, but they will not be equivalent in content. All the same information will still be available for display, but users must configure the wizards to provide the displays that they prefer.
The simplest strategy for rebuilding your personal toolbar in 99.4 is to download the ALLTOOLS custom toolbar and then delete the wizards you wont be using. Details for this operation are currently available in the "Whats New" section of the EUCLID Documentation Pages.
Serials Control
Serials Control functions have been completely wizardized; the previously used commands have been removed from 99.4 and replaced by wizards in the Serials group in the toolbar which provide all the functions for tracking serials. Changes in the Serials Control functions are wide-ranging and complex; Laura Wood of Theology has created detailed documentation for the 99.4 serials module which Doc & Training will distribute to Serials staff. Some of the changes will necessitate individual or batch modification of all current control records.
