" Peacock (Pavo cristatus) " Oil on wood, 48"x18" wide. Artist Commentary: Pea fowl (Pavo cristatus) are magnificent creatures that have appeared in mythological contexts for millenia. From a Christian perspective, their eyes are thought to represent the eyes of the Church, and they represent the Resurrection. They also are associated with the Cherubim hosts of heaven. Peacocks are native to Pakistan, India, and Sri Lanka, but wild populations exist worldwide. They are not endangered. |
