"Eowyn and the Witch King" Oil on canvas, 21"x13" wide. Artist Commentary: Not an image for the faint of heart, this painting depicts the moment when the Witch King, astride his fell beast, has settled onto the carcass of Snowmane after the felling of Theoden King. Eowyn challenges the chief of the Nazgūl to battle, against all odds, and in seeming defiance of Glorfindel's prophecy that "the hand of man" could never kill the Captain of the Nazgūl. In fact, of course, it is the hand of a woman and a Hobbit that ultimately lead to the Witch King's ruin. |
