Artist Commentary: Bilbo's ride on the wine casks that were sent downstream by the wood elves in The Hobbit heralded the escape of Thorin Oakenshield and the remaining Dwarves from the wood Elves of Mirkwood. This nighttime ride is often depicted (even by JRRT himself) as being a dawn event, but it certainly wasn't in the story.
