Artist Commentary: At the opening of The Lord of the Rings, Bilbo threw a grand birthday party for himself and Frodo. By giving away presents to everyone, he hoped to make it easier to give away the Ring to Frodo. Here I've placed Bilbo in contemplation beneath the tree, prior to his speech and departure from the Shire.
