Sir Otto
"Sir Otto"
Oil on canvas, 16"x10" wide.

Artist Commentary: Sir Otto is the hero of The Magic Ring by Friedrich Heinrich Karl de la Motte, Baron Fouqué. In this tale of romance and chivalry, Sir Otto, for the majority of the action in the book, wears black armour whose helmet is fashioned in the form of a ferocious e agle's head, and that was originally owned by Sir Archimbauld. The armour comes to be feared throughout the pagan world of the 3rd Crusade.

Fouque was an acknowledged influence on George MacDonald and William Morris, and the former was an influence on J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and the rest of the Inklings. The Magic Ring, then, representing one of the greatest of the German Romantic novels, tapped into those same themes that would later mark works such as Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia.
