Artist Commentary: In Genesis (6:24), God places one of the cherubim with a flaming sword on the east side of the Garden of Eden. This in order to guard the way to the tree of life, lest fallen man eat also of that fruit. This image ended up being vaguely Byronic, I think, but often paintings take on lives of their own....
