"Cartaphilus" Oil on canvas, 10"x8" wide. Artist Commentary: In medieval times, there were two tales circulating related to the "Wandering Jew". In one, a Roman centurion who cuffed Christ on His way to Golgotha and told him to hurry was answered by Christ, "I will hurry, but you will stay here until I return." As a result, that centurion was doomed to walk the earth, undying, until Christ's second coming. A second tale concerns the apostle John and the passage in the New Testament that suggests that John will not die until Christ returns. This latter passage is referenced in this work by the title Cartaphilus, which means "dearly beloved". |
