Bicarbonate is an important ion for maintaining intracellular and
extracellular pH in the body. Abnormal levels of bicarbonate in tissues are
closely associated with human diseases such as chronic metabolic acidosis, renal
tubular acidosis, glaucoma/cataract, epilepsy, and developmental defects.
Bicarbonate transport into cells is mediated by bicarbonate transporters in
plasma membranes. The people in our laboratory particularly study the
sodium/bicarbonate cotransporters SLC4A in the brain and the kidney. We focus on
the physiological and pathological roles of the sodium/bicarbonate transporters
in neuronal activity as well as in acid/base regulation in the kidney. We also
study molecular mechanisms for bicarbonate ion translocation via transporter
proteins. The
long-term goal of the research is to understand how bicarbonate transporters
affect neuronal activity and renal acid-base regulation. Current research projects: 2. Structure/function analysis of electrogenic sodium/bicarbonate transporters 3. Role of sodium/bicarbonate transporters in cytotoxicity Publications and abstracts 1. Publications
