1. GATT Trade Disputes 1948-1993

The GATT disputes database contains 295 instances of dyadic conflict, each with start and end year, complainant and defendant countries, title of dispute, and a host of variables on various aspects of GATT involvement, bilateral trade dependence and relative size of the economies, etc., including two trichotomous and ordinal measures of the level of cooperation and the bargaining power of the defendant state. Only 256 of the disputes have dependent variable observations, since only these had ceased as of December 1994. If you code the other observations, again please let me know.

Most of the cases and many of the variables were obtained (and heavily processed and supplemented) from an original data file compiled by Robert Hudec, published in hard copy as Robert Hudec, Enforcing International Trade Law: The Evolution of the Modern GATT Legal System (Salem, NH: Butterworth Legal Publishers, 1993), Appendix.

2. Time Series Cross Sectional Data on Party List Nomination Procedures in National Legislatures, 1948-1993

This dataset contains variables listing the % of seats per "relevant" chamber in the national legislature elected in from "closed" party lists, as well as from either "closed" or "preferential vote" (i.e., "open") party lists. Observation units are chamber-years, and include all years from 1945 through 1993. The countries included are participants in any GATT dispute, usually with filled-in observations only for the years surrounding its dispute involvement. (Sorry -- this isn't charity, after all.)

A relevant chamber is one which can reliably in practice override another chamber's veto, as discussed in the documentation for the dataset listed in # 1 above..

Note: A major revision and extension of this dataset is now in progress by Eric Reinhardt and Richard Tucker. A draft codebook is available in Postscript format for now; the dataset will be released when it is complete, in early 1999 most likely.

3. Time Series Data on the US Congress, 1947-1994

This dataset contains a simple annual time series of a variety of Congressional and presidential institutional variables for the United States. Virtually all of these variables are already in the public domain, even in electronic form, and are provided here only for convenience. Variables include party contingents in House and Senate, net party and (gross) individual turnover in both chambers, observed party discipline (CQ and Cox-McCubbins measures), presidential approval ratings, and Congressional Quarterly presidential support scores.
