The GATT disputes database contains 295 instances of dyadic conflict, each with start and end year, complainant and defendant countries, title of dispute, and a host of variables on various aspects of GATT involvement, bilateral trade dependence and relative size of the economies, etc., including two trichotomous and ordinal measures of the level of cooperation and the bargaining power of the defendant state. Only 256 of the disputes have dependent variable observations, since only these had ceased as of December 1994. If you code the other observations, again please let me know.

Most of the cases and many of the variables were obtained (and heavily processed and supplemented) from an original data file compiled by Robert Hudec, published in hard copy as Robert Hudec, Enforcing International Trade Law: The Evolution of the Modern GATT Legal System (Salem, NH: Butterworth Legal Publishers, 1993), Appendix.

This dataset contains variables listing the % of seats per "relevant" chamber in the national legislature elected in from "closed" party lists, as well as from either "closed" or "preferential vote" (i.e., "open") party lists. Observation units are chamber-years, and include all years from 1945 through 1993. The countries included are participants in any GATT dispute, usually with filled-in observations only for the years surrounding its dispute involvement. (Sorry -- this isn't charity, after all.)

A relevant chamber is one which can reliably in practice override another chamber's veto, as discussed in the documentation for the dataset listed in # 1 above..

This dataset contains a simple annual time series of a variety of Congressional and presidential institutional variables for the United States. Virtually all of these variables are already in the public domain, even in electronic form, and are provided here only for convenience. Variables include party contingents in House and Senate, net party and (gross) individual turnover in both chambers, observed party discipline (CQ and Cox-McCubbins measures), presidential approval ratings, and Congressional Quarterly presidential support scores.

4. Time Series Cross Sectional Data on Domestic Strife and the Initiation of Violence at Home and Abroad, 1827-1982

This dataset contains observations of all country-years in the Correlates of War interstate system membership list. Variables included are COW state number and name, year, dummy variables for domestic, international violence (and for violence of either sort), measurements of "contested institutions," major power status, regime type, regime change, and violent and nonviolent domestic strife. 5. Cross Sectional Data on US 4-Digit Manufacturing Industries, 1990

data file (in Excel 4.0, Stata 4.0, SPSS portable, and ASCII comma-delimited formats)

This dataset contains observations of all 459 4-digit SIC (1987 revision) manufacturing industries. It contains variables on 1990 nominal tariff and NTB protection, as well as 1989 or 1987 values of import penetration, export dependence, wages per hour for production workers, industrial (market share) concentration, industry employment and shipments, and the concentration of the industry's employment across physical and political geography by a variety of measures. 6. Cross Sectional Data on Geographic Concentration and Political Mobilization, NES 1988, CPS 1990, 1989-90 PAC Representation

data file (in Stata 4.0 format or Excel 97 format)

These 3 datasets contain individual-level survey responses from the 1988 National Election Studies (NES) and November 1990 Current Population Survey (CPS), merged with characteristics of the industries of those respondents affiliated with the manufacturing sector. Also included is an industry-level dataset, with all (79) manufacturing industries, containing 1989-1990 PAC representation and activity variables.
