WHAT ATTRIBUTES OF GOD ARE TIED
TO HIS NOT BEING A MAN?

Many people are under the impression that it makes no difference one way or the other whether God can be a man. But for the Christian who believes that the Bible is the revealed Word of God, there are some serious problems with the idea of a man being God.

First, God has declared explicitly in His Word that He is God and not man.

Hosea 11:9.
11:9 I will not execute the fierceness of mine anger, I will not return to destroy Ephraim: for I am God, and not man; the Holy One in the midst of thee: and I will not enter into the city.

A statement like this from God Himself should be conclusive. But God has gone farther than this. He has tied at least two of His attributes to the fact that He is not a man.

Numbers 23:19
23:19 God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?

The proof that God does not lie, according to God Himself, is that He is not a man. And the proof that God will not repent, or go back on what He has said He will do, is that He is not the son of man.

What would it mean if, under any circumstances whatsoever, God could become a man? It would mean that God can lie. It would mean that these assurances of His integrity were worthless, and were given under false pretences.

Jesus Christ was both a man and the son of man. If He is God, both of the assurances given by God in Numbers 23:19 are invalid. The integrity of God Himself, based on His own words, depends on Jesus Christ not being God.
